  • Control the decisions that must be made with your parents, not just for them.
  • Get help when needed, especially when a parent becomes frail or sick, to preserve your own health.

  • Make sure you have important documents set up for both you and your parents, including a durable power of attorney, a living will, and a testamentary will.
  • Try to maintain a sense of humor!

Planning for Expenses from Both Sides

In addition, it’s extremely important to consider the financial aspects of living in the Sandwich Generation, including creating an income structure that provides for the future needs of the family. A person should plan for health care costs that could exponentially increase as one’s parents get older, as well as for expenses like college and other life changes for children.
