Now that you’re retired, you don’t have to ask anyone for permission to start planning a vacation. You can just do it. In honor of Senior Independence Month this February, why not get your next trip on the calendar and start making plans?

The United States is full of cities that are worth a trip and pack plenty of fun activities for seniors. This list is by no means comprehensive, but if you could use some help deciding where to go next, we’ve got you covered.

1. Branson, Missouri

Branson offers a mix of natural beauty and cultural entertainment that will ensure most seniors have a great time. There are lovely lakes, mountains, and parks for when you feel like taking in a view, and theatre and music shows to keep things interesting in the evening.

2. Las Vegas, Nevada

If you haven’t been to Las Vegas yet, now’s as good a time as ever. There’s a little bit of something for everyone – with grandiose shows, replicas of popular international sights, fine dining galore, and gambling. Do be careful with that last part though, you don’t want to blow all your retirement savings before you get home.

3. Orlando, Florida

While it’s not the only thing to do there, schedule a healthy dose of your trip for Universal Studios. The iconic vacation destination may have a special place in its heart for kids, but it’s designed to bring fun and entertainment to people all ages.

4. Niagara Falls, New York

One of those sights that make it on to many a bucket list, Niagara Falls makes a worthy vacation for any senior. At night you can see the falls lit up and if you go in the winter, you may get to see how they look frozen. We’re going to cheat a little bit on this one and recommend you make a quick trip to Canada in order to see the falls from both sides, because the view is worth it.

5. Maui, Hawaii

I know, I know – everything else on the list is a specific city, but with Hawaii, narrowing it even down to an island is hard enough (you could always consider a cruise that goes between islands for this trip). You can go on gorgeous hikes, visit beaches, browse art galleries, or take a submarine trip. There’s pretty much no way to go wrong with a trip to Hawaii.

6. Washington, D.C.

With arguably the best collection of museums and historical sites in the country, our nation’s capital can be a fun and educational trip for visitors of any age. You’ve got the White House, the National Mall, the Smithsonian, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Gallery of Art – and we’re just barely getting started. If you time your trip right in the spring you can see the cherry blossoms in bloom.

7. Charleston, South Carolina

A charming southern town on the coast, Charleston is full of historical homes you can tour. You can go golfing, visit Fort Sumter, stroll through some of the city’s gardens, or walk along the pier.

Wherever you go, take a little time for some advance planning. You’ll get more out of your trip if you pinpoint the highlights you most want to experience in advance.
